History
In Sacramento during the late 1800s, medical care was essentially provided at home. Nurses
and family members provided this care under the direction of the family
physician. The only alternative was a hospital stay, where unhygienic
conditions proliferated. Over time and with advances in health
care, hospitals became the respected community institutions that they
are today. Home care decreased, along with the all but extinct “house
call.”
A hundred years later,
the early 1980s saw an emphasis on cost reduction with the onset of
“managed care.” Visionary healthcare providers in the Sacramento area
began to revisit the idea of freeing up expensive hospital beds by
identifying, empowering, and educating patients that could perhaps be
served better in an alternative setting; primarily at home or at
outpatient sites within their community.
In 1982, four such innovative pharmacists formed a partnership
that became the foundation for River City Health Care & Pharmacy.
Today, as in the past, our primary goal remains the same, to service
and benefit your community through our “hospital without walls.”
